The very best free patterns are from American Girl. These are the retired patterns that are authentic AG dress patterns. These patterns you just download and print. I warn you though that each one has lots of pages, so look through the patterns and select the pages you want to print.
Just a note, I have found some of these AG patterns a little too tight, so I always add a little extra fabric when I cut out. I believe the Pleasant Co. dolls were slightly thinner.

This first pattern is one I have made several times.The instructions were a little vague, but if you have some basic sewing knowledge you should be able to figure it out. Be aware that this pattern is a little tight on AG dolls, so cut a bit extra on the back.

This next pattern is one I modified from pajamas.

This is the pattern I used to make my Punjabi dresses.
Here is the pattern made up. I added a length of sheer/filmy fabric for the scarf.
I haven't made either of these next 2 patterns.
Just a note, the swimsuit seemed small when I printed it out on 8.5x11 paper,
but maybe this is allowing for stretchy fabric?
I tried to download some of the free AG doll clothes patterns. They downloaded, but when I opened them, there were like 63 blank pages. Is there a reason for that? Help! ;) Thanks.

ReplyDeleteI downloaded Addy's patterns and it worked fine. You do need Adobe Reader for these patterns. There is a free download for it if you don't have it. Try again, they are great patterns.
ReplyDeleteThe instructions on the regency dress are way more than vague. I have a LOT of sewing knowledge and I can't make heads or tails of the instructions about the skirt. I would love it if you could email me better instructions because all that about three panels makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever.
ReplyDeleteOh dear! I never looked at the instructions. I just cut out a long rectangle of fabric and gathered it. If you download the American Girl Josefina patterns - also free - Her regency dress has more pieces in the bodice, but VERY detailed instructions. The Josefina dress has long sleeves but I used another doll patterns puff sleeve instead, like Molly's or Kirsten's dress sleeve.

Your're welcome Chloe! I love free patterns and when I found ALL the AG free patterns I felt like I had struck gold! I'll bet that dress you made with the wrong way collar was still cute! Hang in there and keep sewing. My grandma (who taught me to sew) told me it gets easier every time you make something and she was right.

You are SO welcome Marie. I have used all these patterns myself. I found some of the AG patterns a bit tight so be sure to add a little in the bodice seam allowances. Enjoy!!

ReplyDeleteI have had all these patterns for years! They are amazing. I have altered the patterns to make modern looking ball gowns and clothes as well as using them as they are. Ladies.. Use your imagination and after a bit of trial and error the possibilities are endless! Thank you for sharing patterns. For the price it takes to buy one I can make an outfit. I do buy online patterns as well to support the community but some freebies thrown in are appreciated. 😉
